St. Paul Students Celebrate Earth Day

On April 22, 2009, the students and staff of St. Paul the Apostle School celebrated Earth Day in a big way. Following a native good morning prayer service, the students were treated to guest speakers from Science North who spoke about the regreening of Sudbury and a Professor Crumplin from Laurentian University who discussed the environmental costs of driving a car. A Recycling Fashion show, litterless lunch, neighbourhood garbage pick up and tree planting session finished off the day.

On June 19, the students gathered again to create this earth daisy to represent the fact that if we work together we can make this world a much greener place.

$12,000 for Jump Rope For Heart, from St. Paul Catholic School Students

Students at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School raised more than $12,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation during their annual Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart campaign. The kickoff to this year’s campaign included a video from The Heart and Stroke Foundation and a demonstration from the Chelmsford Public School Dragonfire team.

The St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School student body fundraised by taking part in various skipping and basketball events organized by the grade 7 and 8 students. Once again, the students received tremendous support from the families and friends for this fundraising event.

St. Paul would like to thank all the pledge donors in their school communities, which include Coniston, Minnow Lake and Wahnapitae. Over the last four years the St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School community has raised more than $50,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. This is certainly one physical activity that has many benefits. The students stay active and help a great cause.

As part of their anti-bullying program, students at St. Paul the Apostle inaugurated the “Bully Busters” team into their school.

Lead by the school’s student parliament and Mrs. Lee, (teacher), the student body prepared rap songs, poster contests and messages about bullying for their February12th, “Bully Busters Day.”

Throughout the day students participated in anti-bullying and bullying awareness activities. Special guests from the community were also invited to take part in the “Bully Busters” presentations.

St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School is seeking to promote a greater awareness of “bullying” through the school’s “bully busters” team.

Led by the school’s student parliament and Mrs. Lee, (teacher), the student body has been preparing rap songs, poster contests and messages about bullying. On Thursday,February 12, 2009, St. Paul Catholic School will be celebrating a “Bully Busters Day.”

Throughout the day students will be participating in anti-bullying and bullying awareness activities. The school has also invited special guests to join them such as Denise Fraser from the Greater Sudbury Police Force, police and her son, Marc Fraser, who oversees the Echo program for the Childrens’ Aid Society

Gold Medal Olympian Visits St. Paul Catholic School

Students at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School had a golden opportunity yesterday when Adam Kreek stopped by the school as part of the Clean Air Champions program. Adam treated the students to a video of his gold medal performance in the eight-man rowing event in Beijing last summer. They also had the opportunity to see and touch the gold medal up close as he permitted them to pass it around the gym.

Students learned about global warming and climate change and Adam discussed how they could make a difference by participating in active transportation rather than by using vehicles that emit greenhouse gases.

Following the presentation, Adam joined one of the classes for a turkey luncheon. It was a special day that the students will remember for quite a while.

Canadian Gold Medal Winner, Adam Kreek to Speak to Students at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School

St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School has invited Adam Kreek, one of the gold medal winners from the Canadian eight-man rowing team in Beijing to visit the school to speak to the Intermediate classes on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. to 12 noon as part of the school’s Clean Air Achievers Program.

The Clean Air Achievers Program encourages children to become physically active and to walk, run, jog, etc. instead of relying on transportation which contributes to climate change.

St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School to Celebrate International Peace Day

St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School will be celebrating International Peace Day on Friday, September 21, 2007 at the school by highlighting peace in our lives at school, at home and in our world.

During announcements throughout the week, St. Paul Catholic School students have shared information with the student body regarding a famous peacemaker. In all classrooms teachers have dedicated time to talking about how peace begins in each person’s heart, and how each student can do things to bring peace into their world, either at school, at home or in their neighbourhood.

On Friday, September 21, 2007, one student from each class will read his or her peace pledge on the announcements. In addition, students will gather in the gym in a moment of silence to pray before embarking upon the school’s walk-a-thon.

The school will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the fundraiser to Development and Peace to help promote peace in Third World nations.

St. Paul Catholic School Students Have a Lot of Heart

Students at St. Paul The Apostle Catholic School raised more than $8,500 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation during the school’s annual Jump Rope for Heart fundraising campaign.

The school’s students attribute much of their success to the tremendous support they received from both family and friends including the Coniston, Minnow Lake and Wahnapitae communities for the fundraising event.

Allison Hall, a Grade 1 student in the French Immersion program at St. Paul was the top fundraiser bringing in a total of $351 in donations.

The money was raised during the school’s annual Jump Rope for Heart.Representatives from the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Area Manager, Cathy Macey and Diane Larose, School Coordinator who were on hand for the cheque presentation at the school thanked the St. Paul Catholic School students for their hard work and generous donation. Macey informed the students that St. Paul The Apostle Catholic School was one of the top schools out of 50 schools that raised money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation this year.

St. Paul Catholic School Celebrates “International Literacy Day”

St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School will be celebrating International Literacy Day on Friday, January 26, 2007 at the school by hosting a Happy Seussday! Seuss-based activities will take place in the morning while parents and other community partners have been invited to the school to read Dr. Seuss books to students in the afternoon.

Jean McHarg, Academic Superintendent of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board along with staff from the Greater Sudbury Public Library will also participate in Literacy Day festivities. There may even be a few Cat in the Hat characters floating around that day!

St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School Sends Special Message to Students’ Father Serving in Afghanistan

St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School will be video taping a special message for the father of three of the school’s students who is presently serving in the Canadian Forces based in Afghanistan.

Mr. Dave MacDonald, Academic Computer Instructor for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board videotaped the students singing O’ Canada and the Topolnicky children delivering messages to their dad and the Canadian Troops. The video was set up on a website, and e-mailed to Mr. Topolnicky, providing him with a link to the site, so that the troops can actually see and hear the students singing and wishing them well.
