Hitting the Trails at St. Paul

Bellmore New Chair of the Board at SCDSB

12/02/2015 - On Tuesday, December 1, 2015 Trustee Michael Bellmore was acclaimed as the new Board Chair for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. Born in Sudbury, Bellmore is a proud alumnus of Sudbury Catholic Schools (Immaculate Conception and St. Charles College). He was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2010, however he was elected to the former Sudbury District Roman Catholic Separate School Board in 1994 as one of the youngest ever elected, and served until 1997. Read more...


Cards Do It - Largest Single Donation to the Sudbury Food Bank for a Five Day Drive

10/28/2015 - The goal was to raise 60 thousand cans in five days. The result was astounding. Students and staff, along with the support of its feeder schools and the community raised 125, 452 cans to line the shelves of the food bank heading into the holiday season. The breakdown is twenty thousand dollars in cash collected and 25, 000 cans. Students will spend the day assisting with the transport of the food to the food bank warehouse. Read more...


Cards ‘can’ do it! 

10/21/2015 - Members of the St. Charles College Student Council are selling tees in the main foyer of the school this week to support the Sudbury Food Bank.  The t-shirts which are retailing for twenty dollars go to supporting the school’s annual food drive.   That means the sale of one shirt equates to 100 cans to line the shelves at the food bank. Read more...

Sudbury Catholic Schools - Relays for Life at St. John, St. Anne and St. Paul

05/13/2015 - As part of their school’s Catholic Education activities, St. John, St. Anne and St. Paul Catholic Elementary Schools held an in-school Relay for Life on Friday, May 8, 2015. For St. John, this year marks the school’s seventh year hosting the event. St. John teacher and event organizer Irene Raymond was talking to staff at the other two schools and decided that they too would start an in-school Relay for Life event.  Read more...


Panthers Hit the Streets of Downtown Sudbury

A total of 17 students and 4 teachers participated in the 5km race around downtown Sudbury. Update on Negotiations

04/24/2015 - You may have heard in the media that the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association ((OECTA), representing elementary, secondary and occasional teachers in our Board voted to approve strike action. Central bargaining is continuing between the province, unions and the Ontario Catholic School Trustees Association (OCSTA), which represents Catholic school boards at the provincial table. At present, we are not aware of any planned labour disruptions by OECTA. Read more...

Christmas Arts Spectacular tonight at St. Charles College

Cardinal Can Total Crushed Once Again

St. Paul Panthers Hit the Streets for SudburyRocks!

05/14/2014 - On Sunday, May 11 the St. Paul Running Club participated in the SudburyROCKS 5km Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes. A total of twenty students from Grades 5-8 participated in the 5K race while two students in the primary grades completed the 1K race. Running coaches Mme. Lavalle, Mme. Gautheir and Mlle. Vendramin are so very proud of the dedication and spirit of all the runners. The Running Club would like to thank the Knights of Columbus Council 6074 for their generous donation again this year to help offset registration fees for the students. St. Paul Celebrates Catholic Education Week

05/09/2014 - As part of Catholic Education Week, students in the Primary division at St. Paul Catholic Elementary School came together to "Serve in the love of Christ" with a faith-based play day. Students had the opportunity to work with students from all of the other primary classes and rotated through a variety of activities such as read alouds, art activities, virtue chalk writing, video of "The Good Samaritan", songs and dances. It was a great way for students to share their faith in an informal setting and form new friendships. A great time was had by all staff and students! Read more...

St. Paul Choir Recognized at Kiwanis Music Festival

04/17/2014 - The St. Paul Choir under the direction of Ms Kristine Shewchuk and Mme Ashley Nodwell participated at the Kiwanis Music Festival at the end of March. The choir, consisting of over 40 members from Grades 1 to 6, sang the song "I Am a Small Part of the World" by Sally K. Albrecht and Jay Althouse. After a lot of hard work and practice, the students were very excited to receive a Gold Award. At the Kiwanis Award Ceremony, the choir was also recognized with the "Elementary School Choir Award".  Read more...


A Needle in a Haystack

11/22/2013 - On Wednesday, November 20, 2013, St Paul witnessed a true expression of joy and family togetherness! Charli, a grade 2 student, came into the school after recess with a flood of tears…she had just lost a tooth somewhere in the school yard that had come out earlier in the day. However, this was not just any tooth, it was her First lost tooth!! Despite the incredible odds againstt finding the little tooth - like finding a needle in a haystack - teacher Tammy O'Shaughnessy's Grade 7/8 French Immersion class set out with Charli back to the school yard in search of the prize. Sure enough, the tooth was found, and a great big smile back on Charli's face….less one tooth of course!! Great job Panthers!!! Read more...

This initial event's (theme: Hands-On in the Community) purpose was to introduce this new arts group to the students. St. Paul "Digs In" with a New Sandbox

10/08/2013 - Students and staff are quite pleased to announce that we have a beautiful, brand new sandbox at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Elementary School! College Boreal and Ontario works collaboratively with teachers Angela Cundari and Tammy Lavalle during the spring and summer to set up the groundwork and bring this project to fruitition! The sandbox was built during the summer. On Wednesday, October 1st, the students "cut" the celebratory ribbon and blessed the new sandbox. The school community wants to say a big thank you to the St. Paul School Council chair and College Boreal for being part of this great project, as well as the staff that were involved with this amazing addition to the school. Read more...


Stacking Cans from the Ground Up at St. Charles College

06/27/2013 - On Thursday, June 13, representatives from the Canadian Diabetes Association were on hand at St. Paul Catholic Elementary School to present the St. Paul Panthers Running team with two banners. The students and staff that make up this club had participated in the 2013 Sudbury Rocks race, and were thrilled to be acknowledged for their efforts. The group was presented with the Sudbury Rocks School Challenge banner for Highest Percentage of Participation for an Elementary School, as well as Highest Amount of Pledges raised for an Elementary School. Read more...

Riley's Request

03/18/2013 - Riley Callander, a grade 6 student at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Elementary School came up with a great idea. He suggested that the school designate Thursday, March 7th as Hat Day. Each student that wore a hat gave a donation to the Maison Vale Hospice. Riley was thrilled to learn that $300 was raised. A huge, heart-felt thank you goes out to Riley and to the wonderful students and staff at St. Paul the Apostle School. Riley visited the hospice on Saturday, March 9th to deliver the donation. Read more...

11/27/2012 - On the evening of Wednesday, November 14, 2012 St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Elementary School welcomed approximately 60 guests which included students in Grades 3 to 6 and their families for a night of learning and family fun! Families had the opportunity to participate in four different stations; Are You Smarter than a Smartboard?, Star Tech: The Next Generation, How I Met Your Math Teacher and The Amazing Game. Elders in the Classroom at St. Paul Catholic Elementary School

11/22/2012 - First Nation Elder, Vince Pawis visited all grade 5 and 6 students at St. Paul Catholic Elementary School on October 30th. The “Elders in the School Project” promotes awareness, understanding and appreciation of the rich histories, cultures and perspectives of First Nation, Metis and Inuit people. St. Paul Students and Residents of Coniston Welcome New Walking Trail

10/23/2012 - On Friday, October 12th, students from Mme Gautheir's 5/6 F.I, Mme Roy's F.I. and Ms. Beneteau's gr. 7/8 classes had the opportunity to attend the "grand opening" of the Jean Tellier Trail. The 2 km trail allows pedestrians to walk in a natural setting without motorized vehicles. The trail runs from Edward Street to Rideau Street. The plan is for this trail to grow in the future. It is a way for the community of Coniston to join the trend of making Greater Sudbury a friendly environment for pedestrians of all ages. This project was endorsed by Coniston Community Action Networt (CAN) . Our students will take advantage of the "backyard trail" during DPA. Read more...


Cardinals Share Their 'Goodness' with the Sudbury Food Bank

10/22/2012 - The line ‘Teach me goodness’ is an integral part of the St. Charles College motto. This week, the students at the school learned about goodness and shared the fruits of their labour. The secondary school students, coupled with children in the feeder schools canvassed together for the largest school food drive in the city. The goal was to raise 60 000 cans for the Sudbury Food Bank and the Cardinals surpassed that goal with a new all-time total of 125 080 cans. This is the single biggest contribution in history to the Sudbury Food Bank.  Read more...


St. Paul Gives Big

10/18/2012 - Wow! St. Paul Catholic Elementary students demonstrated incredible enthusiasm and generosity during the S.C.C. Annual Food Drive Challenge. The goal this year is to collect 60 000 food items for local food banks in order for Mr. Jim Szilva to be let off of the city bus. Our students collected the equivalent of 10 000 cans! This included cash donations and non-perishable food items. The St. Paul Panthers were certainly eager to help out and support this wonderful cause. 10/17/2012 - On Thursday, September 27th, St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Elementary students and staff participated in the Toonies for Terry Walk/Run, Students were asked to donate at least one toonie for the Terry Fox Foundation. This is a very special fundraiser that is dear to the hearts of staff and students at St. Paul School. Lisa, a past graduate of St. Paul, who had osteosarcoma, the same cancer as Terry Fox, inspired staff and students with her courage and passion for life. 10/16/2012 - Excitement for Halloween has already begun for the JK / SK and Grade 1 French Immersion students at St. Paul School. On Wednesday, October 10th, the youngsters boarded a bus en route to Sturgeon Falls. The destination was Leisure Farms. The children were amazed at the amount of pumpkins to be found on site. Activities included a tractor pulled wagon ride into the woods, roasting marshmallows and toasting homemade breads over the fire, picnic lunch, hot chocolate and cookie snack, corn and straw mazes and of course, choosing their own pumpkin to decorate. Family Pasta Night at St. Paul

04/20/2012 - The St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School Council hosted a Family Pasta Night on Thursday April 19. The council members Angela Paris, Jennifer Whynott, Anastasia Rioux, Rikki Larcher, Lisa Wrights and Natasha Folino have provided families opportunities throughout this school year to come together with families from our school to play and socialize. St. Paul Captures Gold at Kiwanis

04/04/2012 - The St. Paul the Apostle primay choir under the direction of Ms. Kristine Shewchuk and accompanied by Ms. Christina Begin was awarded a Gold Award and a mark of 89 at the Kiwanis Music Festival on Tuesday April 3, 2012. This young group of children sang "A Song of Peace" by Teresa Jennings. The adjudicator wrote "I am thankful to have heard you today! Keep singing!" Partners Sign Community Threat Assessment Protocol

04/04/2012 - Representatives of the Greater Sudbury Police Service, area school boards and local agencies signed a Community Threat Assessment Protocol on March 27, 2012, pledging to work together to ensure schools remain safe for students and staff. The Community Threat Assessment Protocol is a collaborative response to student behaviour that may pose a risk to other students, staff and members of the community. The school was fortunate to celebratet with the Bishop one last time before he leaves our diocese to become the Bishop of Valleyfield Quebec.The staff and students prepared small farewell gifts for Bishop Simard which he was thrilled to receive. Empathy at St. Paul Catholic Elementary School

05/20/2011 - In keeping with this months virtue of Empathy, the St. Paul Catholic Elementary Students in Ms. Purawec's 7/8 FI class collected money to purchase sandwich fixings and on Friday May 20th all the students worked together to prepare sandwiches and a small sweet to be delivered to the Elgin Street Mission. The students worked in an assembly line fashion as some buttered, some spread the mustard, some added the cheese and some added the meat. The last station was the group who added a small sweet and short message with each completed sandwich. We are very proud of our students and their generosity. Read more...

05/09/2011 - Catholic Education Week at St. Paul School ended with a tea party for the Mothers and Grandmothers of Mme. Gautheir's SK FI class. The students entertained their guests, shared treats together and each presented their Mother with an individually authored storybook and flower. As a special treat, the grade 8 core french class, under the guidance of Mme. Junior Math Night at St. Paul Catholic Elementary School

02/02/2011 - This past month, St. Paul the Apostle School hosted a junior math night for parents and their children in our junior grades. Krista Sarmatiuk and Connie Ubriaco from Academic Services joined our teachers to lead a very successful Math night. Students demonstrated the ir knowledge in solving math problems and parents got to learn about manipulatives, gallery walks and neat ways to solve multiplication problems. St. Paul Catholic Elementary School Enjoys Aboriginal Day Celebration

03/27/2010 - The Student Parliament at St. Paul Catholic Elementary saw their months of hard work result in a powerful and beautiful Aboriginal Day of celebration on March 26, 2010. This group of students applied for a Speak Up Grant which is a grant that is applied for from the Ministry of Education's Student Voice initiative. These grants are available for student-led projects and are available for students who want to make a difference in their classroom, school and community. As well, the school applied for additional funding from the Board to supplement the costs of their Aboriginal celebration. With the help and support of their teacher, Marlene Lee, these students were successful in their applications and collectively worked to bring together a day for their entire school community that allowed all of the students to share in the learning and understanding of Aboriginal culture.  Read more...

St. Paul Students Have Green Thumbs

St. Paul Teacher Wins Wal-Mart's Teacher of the Year Contest

Ken Coutu, Assistant Manager for Wal-Mart Sudbury, recently presented Janet Carscallen, a Grade 2/3 teacher at St. Paul The Apostle School in Coniston with a special certificate in Wal-Mart’s “Teacher of the Year” contest. Mrs. Carscallen has been teaching for 32 years and was nominated for this prestigious award by the students who wrote letters to Wal-Mart explaining why she should be “Teacher of the Year.” Read more...
